The Value Of Free?

By Dan Guillermo | Affiliate Marketing

If asked, most people fully support the idea of free information; and I'm all for it as well. We even have studies explaining that the primary reason people browse the web is to get information – and guess what they want it for free.

Have you ever asked yourself why the information on the internet is free? I believe, and I'm pretty sure most people would agree, this information is worth something. But if that's the case, then why is this information free?

As we speak, we have two explanations as to why you will find millions of reports, articles and other kinds of content on almost every subject on the web for free.

1. Those who helped get the internet going did not find a way to make people pay for the information it contained.

2. Many free articles, books and other content bring with them special product and service offers. You have to pay for these.

Many informational resources on the web come with these offers today. They may be books, videos, audios, or seminars. I even find it puzzling that there are people who still speak of how good the information a webinar provided was, although they were turned off by a request to buy something at the end.

Ask yourself this – how else will they get paid for their valuable free information? This is not new it is a time-tested sales tactic and it is not going away any time soon.

Sellers are always friendly and charming with their free offers, and that is usually a sales tactic to warm you up to the offer they will make you at the end of their honeyed pitch. That is why the internet is full of free offers like “free consultation” a “free 15-minute session” “Free E-Book” etc..

Is this relevant to your Online Success?
Yes! Of course it is; and in a big way actually. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen potentially successful online entrepreneurs ruin their chances of business success by condemning free things.

Statements like, “I not attending that seminar, I know they will end up trying to sell me something” are far too common. The question is why wouldn't they try to sell you something? They need to be compensated for taking the time to prepare very valuable information for people like you.

But the hidden financial motive aside, the information you get from such seminars could be precisely what you need to take your game to the next level. In any case, who would give you priceless industry gems for free? I’ll tell you who – someone who doesn’t have anything worthwhile to offer.

Let’s look at it from another angle. Would you trust the business acumen of someone who gives away their signature product or service for free and is therefore unable to get any reward out of it? I wouldn’t either.

So, the next time you come across a pitch that is relevant to your line of work, don’t pass up on it because you can smell the end-of-pitch sales offer from a mile away. Pay attention. Learn something.

Try to understand how they package their bonus offers if they have any. While at it, find out how they create a sense of scarcity and urgency through time and product limitations.

But don’t be fooled, making a good sales pitch is something few people can pull off – it is an art. And mastering this skill is paramount for your success as an entrepreneur – both online and offline. So, be more open to the “free” offers knowing at the back of your mind that you are getting back something more valuable than the time you will spend enjoying the freebie.

Some points to master during the free calls include how they open, and how they close. In fact, go ahead and write these points down for future reference.

In short, when you next come across a “free webinar”, take a minute or so to sign up. And when the day arrives, attend and learn something. Keep an eye out for the techniques they are using and other great information and ideas revealed through the webinar. You can then take these lessons with you and apply them to your business.

I am pretty sure with a few of these experiences and proper application of the skills learned, you will start to notice some changes to your business, thanks to better sales tactics.

As surprising as it maybe there are people running 7 figure businesses by giving stuff away.  Dean Holland is one of those millionaire marketers that has figured out how to make millions giving stuff away.

  • Wow Dan,

I can’t believe how many people won’t attend a webinar because of the “pitch” at the end. I love going to free webinars not only to learn the content, but moreover to see how someone strategizes the event. The more I attend the more I can emulate to give my own “pitch” when I do so.

Plus there is always a good deal when attending. If I’m interested, I sure want to learn more and for a very low price at the front end of the webinar, I can always get a good deal.

We do free things all the time….our blogs, social status, etc. That stuff we put hours of thought into and we give it for free most of the time. A small percentage of the time we review something or have our own products/and services to sell to our readers. Therefore….free does work.

Good article Dan. I think some people are skeptical of “free” because there is always a cost, even if it’s an hour of your time.

Afterall, how many times have you attended a free webinar to find it’s 30 minutes of “how great am I”, 10 minutes of reguritated info then a 20 minute sales pitch 🙂
