Affiliate or Product Creator?

By Dan Guillermo | Affiliate Marketing

I've said before and I'll say it again selling digital information products such as eBooks, courses and video series is one of the very best way to get started making money online. Think about it…its a very simple business model. You can sell a ton of products that cost you close to nothing to produce. You don't have to worry about storing inventory or shipping merchandise. Essentially you are making close to 100{f1a5857f9c8897168761b58b410506661f58ae4f6500f6ee687c781d448259db} profit from every sale.

This still leaves one big question in my mind, and that is: “should I create and sell my own product or sell an product as an affiliate”. The fact is, both of these options have generated a ton of money for online marketers. Let’s take a look at both sides and then you will be able to make an educated decision as to which is the best path.

Creating a Product

There are many advantages to creating your own digital product. For starters you’ll will own the product 100{f1a5857f9c8897168761b58b410506661f58ae4f6500f6ee687c781d448259db}. This means you won't have to split the earnings with anyone if you don't want to. You will also have full creative rights to your product, meaning you make the rules. You decide on the branding, marketing and content.

Owning your own digital product also makes you more of an authority figure on a subject. You will be looked upon as an expert in a certain subject or niche. This is a big step in your branding as it gives you credibility and will eventually help you as you build a following and eventually launch more products.

Eventually, you can even recruit affiliate marketers to help you sell your product. This can mean you have an several marketers promoting your product to their list of followers. In the end you will have your product exposed to many more people resulting in more commissions and a larger list of followers.

Selling Products as an Affiliate

The other side of the coin also has its advantages. Many people will prefer to sell other peoples digital products as an affiliate because there is essentially no barriers to entry. You do not have to worry about developing a products yourself. This means that you can start selling online right away and making money immediately. You can have your business up and running in minutes without any overhead and a minimal initial time commitment.

Furthermore, when selling an affiliate product you can minimize risk because you have the definite advantage of being able to choose a product to sell that is already selling. In other words, you can look for a product that has a proven track record which means you know that it can be profitable. With your own product you have no assurances and run the risk that you will create something something no one wants.

When you sell an affiliate product you can make anywhere from 50 to 100{f1a5857f9c8897168761b58b410506661f58ae4f6500f6ee687c781d448259db} of the commission. You can essentially sell as many as you want or can. There’s no upper limit here in terms of the  potential profit you can make. However, the big money is made when you find the right product with a proven track record that you trust and can stand behind, and you can earn commission from the entire funnel. This is what made all the difference for me.

I would love to summarize it all up and give you a great conclusion but the fact is that there is no one size fits all answer. To some it will make perfect sense to create their own product but to others; affiliate marketing will be the answer. At least now, you have all the information to make the best possible decision for you.

I’d love to hear what you think about these 2 options and which you think is the best path to Digital Wealth?

    Hello Dan,

You have touched an important issue when it comes to internet marketing. I have seen both and I am still practicing the two models.

Most successful people will tell you that’ the hard way is the only and most sustainable way’. With that, I can tell you that the future lies in you owning your product and selling it. Affiliate marketing is good, but you are at the mercy of the product owner or the affiliate network company.

    That is my little cent.

    Thanks

  • Hi Dan,
I think affiliate marketing is great for somebody that is just starting a new online business and still has a lot to learn. It can provide a nice income and also teach you a lot about how funnels work, as well as honing your skills in email writing and helps you get a feel for some of the areas your audience needs help with and problems they need solutions for. It might also help you in drilling down deeper and narrowing your niche. It’s very important to only promote products that you believe in, that will build trust with your list.

I also believe anybody doing affiliate marketing owes it to themselves to try product creation at least once at some point because your own product can turn into evergreen income you’ll be getting for years to come, as well as open up a lot of possibilities in joint ventures and developing your own army of affiliates.

    Thanks, Steve
